Elk Grove Unified School District Meets with Board Members to Report Exciting Success and Learning Innovations
Elk Grove, CA – December 18, 2020 – This past month, the Elk Grove Unified School District met with school board members in a virtual meeting to discuss problems, successes, and challenges the district has faced over the past few months as students and teachers have adjusted to virtual learning. Principal’s of Elk Grove High School, Joseph Kerr Middle School, Elk Grove Elementary School, Ellen Feickert Elementary School, Florence Markofer Elementary School, and James A. McKee Elementary School all joined the call to report on their schools progress.
The principals were able to report that the Elk Grove Unified School District worked tirelessly in the past months to ensure students in the district were actually learning and engaged in school. Through programs implemented at the different schools, attendance is the same or better than previous years, although school is attended virtually. Incentives for participation and learning support have been put in place for student success at all of the schools.
The district also reported on the large efforts made to ensure students are well equipped with technology and tech support to complete the school tasks they are assigned. Beyond providing technology, teachers in the district have made minor optimizations to make the process easier, like linking Zoom meetings in the same area on the screen for all classes and grades.
Through parent and family feedback, and collaboration with other administrators, Elk Grove has been able to continue to provide an excellent education and experience to students in the district. This shows as student performance and grades continue to trend similar to previous years, although teaching has been done through distance learning.
In addition to academic success, Elk Grove administrators also reported on the district’s focus on student’s social and emotional learning needs. Every school reported how they are adjusting differently to meet those needs, whether it be having students keep journals detailing their thoughts and feelings or providing an online hangout area where kids can connect to socialize. Students who are struggling with tough issues are referred to school psychologists and given extra attention and tutoring.
Overall the district is continuing to innovate to meet new and unique challenges and determine the best approach to resolve them. To view the upcoming board meeting and learn more about what is happening in EGUSD, tune in on January, 20th and visit the EGUSD website.
